        Barra
Southern island of the larger Outer Hebrides, Scotland, part of the Western Isles unitary council area; area 90 sq km/35 sq mi; population (2001) 1,100. It is separated from South Uist by the Sound of Barra. The principal town is Castlebay. The main industries are fishing and tourism.
Archaeological sites of interest on Barra include Allt Chrisal/Allt Easdale, a neolithic site dating from around 4000 BC. Above the valley of Borve is Dun Bharra, a well-preserved neolithic burial chamber. There are also a number of standing stones on the island.
The fishing and fish-curing activities of the 19th century declined in the middle of the 20th century, although with government funding fishing has recently experienced a revival.
The population has declined significantly since the 1911 figure of 2,620, and is predicted to fall further.
Scheduled air services land at low tide on the beach at Traigh Mhor in the north. Car ferries sail from Castlebay to and from Oban, Lochboisdale on South Uist, and Mallaig on the mainland.
        Features
The medieval Kisimul Castle, once home of the piratical clan McNeil, is situated on a rock off Castlebay. The novelist Compton Mackenzie is buried at St Barr's church. At Cill Bharra, in the north of the island, there is a ruined 12th century church and a graveyard where, in 1865, a stone was found with both a Celtic cross and a runic inscription. It is argued that this demonstrates that Vikings may have settled in Barra long enough for some to accept the Christian faith. Other tourist attractions include An Dubharaidh, a thatched cottage museum in Craigston, and the Isle of Barra Heritage Centre in Castlebay.

Great destinations: The Isle of Gigha, Scotland - by P Vandegrift ...
Gigha is just 3 miles off the Scottish coast on the Gulf Stream and about 7 miles long and 2 miles at the widest, with only just over 100 inhabitants, with a single track road that runs the length of the island as well as a magnificent 50 acre garden.
There are archeaological features, burial grounds and ancient dwellings, reminding visitors of the historical past of the Picts and the Vikings, as well as fine fishing, great walks, a pub, shop, and B&B accommodation.
Recently the islanders have bought the island themselves, but many challenges lie ahead for them.
The white sand beaches are for the most part clean and sparkling, but some of them are in out of the way places, so it pays to buy a map of the island before you head off on your adventures on a hired bike.
For a family with young children like ourselves it was a great place to hang out and chill for three or four days, but it's ideal for the day tripper with a yearning to enjoy a slow pace of life, wildflife, walking, and biking.
In translation Gigha means Gods Isle, and it was perhaps the most tranquil and lovely place we have visited.

          Reino Unido: datos generales

              Shopping in Minsk
Minsk is a nice city for shopping. Of course it doesn’t offer such a range of goods as major Russian cities like Moscow or St Petersburg and it doesn’t have all the chain stores that is likely to be found else where in Europe, but on the other hand Minsk offers nice places that you won’t find anywhere else. There is two big stores on the city’s main street Prospekt Nezavisimosti and not far away from the main street there is the Dinamo market.

TSUM - Tsentralnij Univermag sells most kind of goods. Minsk. December 2005.
              Where to shop?
              Main street Prospekt Nezavisimosti
The biggest range of shops are to be found along the central parts of the main street Prospekt Nezavisimosti, from the central station and 4 kilometers northeast. On this part of the main street one may find big stores like GUM (Prospekt Nezavisimosti 21) and Tsum (Prospekt Nezavisimosti 54). Both stores offer a wide variety of goods, everything from clothes to radio and TV. Looking for a digital watch “made in Belarus” by Elektronika? Then GUM is the right place. Elektronika watches is a must for the collector or those who likes kitch. GUM also offers some nice “soviet style” radios.

              Books
Books are really cheap in Belarus. The TSKM bookstore on Prospekt Nezavisimosti should be of interest for those who is interested in books. Most books sold are in Russian language, but there is also books abotu Minsk and Belarus in english and there is a lot of dictionaries on offer. Another good bookstore is Mir Knigi na Janki Kupaly 27.

There still are some shops which practise an older way of shopping. First you chose the product and then you pay for it and get a receipt. Finally you leave the receipt and get what you paid for. Most shops however left that system many years ago.

                Transport in Minsk
Public transportation in Minsk is a cheap and quite convenient way to travel within the city. There are no timetables to think of and trips are made with quite short time-intervals. However in wintertime those intervals may sometimes feel like an eternity if waiting for a bus or a tram on the street. Both the subway and busses may sometimes be very crowded. So using the subway or public busses with a wheelchair or perambulator are not recommended. First thing to do when arriving in Minsk is to buy a city map with the public transport schemes. If using a printed guide book one should be aware about that most probably the street names will be wrong as they have been changed. More about that later.

                Traffic in Minsk. January 2006.

                Minsk subway
The Minsk subway consist of just two lines but a third line is planned. Subway is often the most convient way to travel if one is there is a station close to the destination. The two lines meet at the Oktybarskaya and Kupalovskaya station. The subway is closed during the night.
None of the lines does splitt up so it's easy really easy to travel with the Minsk subway. The only tricky thing is that the station names are in Belarusian but are often called by their Russian names. Often the Russian and belarussian names are similar, but not always.
Ticket price for the metro is always the same no matter how far you go (460 BYR ATM, app. 20 Eurocent). When entering the metro system one has to pay with a token or a magnetic card. These will be bought in the station building, right after the entrance. There are separate entrances and exits.

                Taxi
The official Taxi cars in Minsk are often yellow Russian made Volga cars with black and white squares and having a taxi sign on the roof but may be of any make and in any colour. Taxes varies among different cars, but are app. 1000 BYR for entrance, 1000 BYR per kilometre and 10000 BYR hour. If the car doesn´t use a taximeter it's better to decide upon the price before setting off. Taxis can be ordered at phonenumber 007 among others.

                Buses and trams
If one plan to go with the buses or trams the best thing is to get a recent city map with a public transport scheme. Tickes are bough in advance at special ticket stands. Tickets are for one journey only. And should be stamped with the red buttons that busses and trams are equipped with, otherwise the tickets aren’t guilty. It’s possible to buy a monthly pass for busses, trams or both means of transport. Those tickets don’t have to be stamped but names should be written on the back for the ticket to be guilty. If necessary it’s possible to buy tickets from the driver, but that is both inconvenient and more expensive that getting tickets in advance. Ticket controls are common.

City and administrative centre of Mahilyow oblast (province), east-central Belarus, on the Dnieper River. It was founded in 1267 as a fortress and became a town in 1526, when it was under Lithuanian rule. Later passing to Poland, it became Russian by the First Partition of Poland, in 1772. In 1812 a major engagement with Napoleon’s troops took place outside the town. Mahilyow was long a significant trading centre, and its importance was much enhanced by the coming of the railway in 1904. Serious damage was inflicted in World War II, but four churches of the 16th and 17th centuries have survived. Modern Mahilyow is a major industrial city, producing synthetic fibres, industrial equipment, electric motors, and a range of consumer goods. Mahilyow has teacher-training and machine-building institutes. Pop. (1995 est.) 366,000.

Babruysk or sometimes spelled Bobruisk is located in Mahilyow Voblast of Belarus on the Berezina river. It is a large city in Belarus with a population of approximately 227,000 people (data of 2000). The name Babrujsk (as well as that of the Babrujka River) probably originates from the Belarusian word babyor (бабёр) (beaver), many of which used to inhabit the Berezina. However, beavers in the area have been almost eliminated by the end of the 19th century due to hunting and pollution.
Babrujsk occupies an area of 66 square km, and comprises over 450 streets whose combined length stretches for over 430 km.
Babrujsk is located at the intersection of railroads to Asipovichy, Zhlobin, Kastrychnitski and roads to Minsk, Gomel, Mogilev, Kalinkavichy, Slutsk, and Rahachow. It has the biggest timber mill in Belarus, and is also known for its chemical, machine building and metal-working industries. In march of 2002, 46,980 Babrujsk citizens have been employed in some form of manufacturing.

                    Pinsk

Pinsk is a very nice city, but very small. There is one there, Hotel Pripyat'. It is located next to the prominade, you can't miss it. There is also an attraction park at the end of the prominade. There are lots of street markets there, they are called Bazzares.
If you are a person who is into fast and exciting cities that include a good nightlife, Pinsk is not for you. If you are, on the other hand, a person who likes to relax, Pinsk is perfect.
Pinsk is looking very calm, but probably it has much changed. I found there 5 hotels (and Pripyat is not the best one, i liked Aelita (Chyhunachnaja St, 37A)) and about 15 restaurants only near the main square. Pinsk is good as a transite town, because it is stricktly connected by railway and with other principal cities of Belarus and two beautiful Ukrainian towns of Lutsk and Rovno. For all visitors I advice to taste local meat delicacies that are seen the best in Belarus. Local inhabitants are very friendly. I also noted mistletoes in many trees.

                        Holmskije vorota. Brest, Belarus.

Belarusian lands lie on the crossroads of Europe. The strive of Vikings and later Scandinavians South, the attacks of Tartars from South, The Teutonic and later German invasions from West, the continuous onslaught of Muscovy and later Russian Empire from East - all these factors have shaped a system of fortifications across Belarusian lands. These pages look back into the military history of Belarus. One should know a complicated history of Belarusian statehood to understand the factors that were involved in shaping Belarusian castles and knighthood. Initially a number of smaller principalities it was later unighted by invited Lithuanian duke into a Slavic Principality with center in Navahrudak, that later grew into an enormous multi-cultural state - The Grand Duche of Lithuania - which spanned from Baltic to Black Sea. While some of this expansion was voluntary other growth was done through military invasions and battles. And so Belarusian military knowledge was acquired through constant clashes with and assimilations of these very different cultures. The colorful map below shows the modern territory of Belarus with the monuments if Belarusian architecture, including castles, that survived 12 stormy ages of Belasian history.

                          Vida nocturna
Algunos restaurantes tienen música y danza tradicional.
