Set in a wooded region between the ocean and the hills of the Serra de Sicó, this small town is closely associated with the Marquis of Pombal (chief minister of king José I, responsible for many reforms and for rebuilding Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake), who died here in 1777. He lived in what is now the Praça Marquês de Pombal square, where the family crest can be seen at the old prison and the granary. At the Municipal Museum, installed in the former monastery of St. Anthony, there is also a collection of art and documents focusing on the marquis.
The town, however, was founded in the 12th century by the Knights Templar and is dominated by a stately castle which belonged to the Master of the Templars, Gualdim Pais. According to legend, the name of Pombal (dovecote) was given to the town when the king saw many pigeons on the castle´s battlements.
Other interesting sites are the Church of Our Lady of Cardal (built in 1703), the Old Clock Tower (15th century), the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety (1551) and the 17th-century manor-house of the Condes de Castelo Melhor.
On the coastline, the vast Golden Beach of "Osso da Baleia" (whalebone) remains idyllic for those searching a peaceful spot by the ocean.
Inland, the mountainous scenery of the Serra de Sicó offers unforgettable views, small stone villages rising amid green fields and the magnificent valley of the river Anços.
The village of Louriçal is dominated by the old Clarissas Convent, with a Baroque entrance-hall and fine 18th-century decorated tiles.
On the county limits, the village of Redinha, founded in 1159, is enchanting with its unusual pillory, a Manueline Mother Church and a medieval stone bridge.
The county´s gastronomy is rich in sweets and cakes, such as "bolo de noz" (nut cake), "sonhos de canela" (cinnamon fritters), "coscorões" (pancakes) and "tigeladas" (made with eggs, milk and sugar).

    Jardim do Castelo (Abrantes):

Picturesque Portimao is the western Algarve’s largest town and hits all the right notes as an energetic holiday destination and as a base to explore this captivating coastline. Whether you want to do nothing more than sit on silky-soft sands and apply the odd dollop of sun cream or shop ‘til you drop – there’s something for everyone here. The sleek promenade will charm the pants off you for a start. A pretty cobbled walkway lined with swaying palm trees is the perfect spot for a stroll day or night. It’s also where the yachting set park up, but if you can’t beat ‘em, join a relaxing river cruise or a big game-fishing trip where you might reel in a swordfish or two. If you’ve come for the beaches, you won’t be disappointed – more like spoilt for choice with what’s on your doorstep. Praia Da Rocha, to the south is perhaps the Algarve’s most famous beach and the place where the region’s holidays started. Just next door, chilled out Praia Da Rocha is a surfers paradise, so head here to strike a pose. Praia de Alvor is close to the old fishing village of Alvor and stretches for 2km with undulating sand dunes that create the perfect suntrap. And if you want lie back in tranquillity, you’ll find no end of small, secluded coves scalloped along the shores. When it comes to eating out, charcoal-grilled sardines rule in Portimao – it’s their big thing, and they’re fat, tasty and gorgeous with a glass of Portuguese red. There are plenty of restaurants dotted about with traditional Portuguese dishes on the menu as well as international delicacies. End your evening at a bustling bar or shift up a gear in neighbouring Praia Da Rocha where you’ll find a sparkling cosmopolitan scene.

    Faro

    Campo Maior
Other towns to visit are Campo Maior, with its rather morbid Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones), dated from 1766 and entirely covered with human bones.

Campo Maior is a lovely calm village situated in the vast Alentejo region, nearby the border with Spain. A land of history, tradition and costumes where peace of mind and tranquillity are the rule.
The origins of Campo Maior are quite ancient and, according to a curious legend, the settlement got its name when three families decided to settle together for greater protection in a place they all could comfortably fit, as this region was in war between Muslims and Christian, and one of them exclaimed when they discovered a clearing in the brushwood: "This is our bigger field (campo maior)!"
Nevertheless, Campo Maior has vestiges of previous occupation, such as Roman and even Moorish, with its white small rural houses with coloured bands in narrow streets that breath history.
Several episodes marked the history of this town and of the Alentejo region as well, and in the 17th century, Campo Maior was the second most important military centre in all the Alentejo (after Elvas). In 1732 a huge explosion on a powder magazine destroyed much of the city and more than one thousand people died. Much of the town was afterwards restored, reconstructed and rebuilt.
The heritage of Campo Maior is the living testimony of this rich history, as one can observe through its Castle, or through the beautiful Mother Church with its macabre Bone Chapel (Capela dos Ossos) built after the big explosion, or the São João Baptista Church, the República Square with its lovely Pillory, or through the interesting 18th century Santo António Convent.
In a region marked by plain landscapes, the Campo Maior region has two dams (Caia and Abrilongo) that change all the panorama and provide great conditions for the most diversified type of leisure, sport and nautical activities.
In Campo Maior is located the biggest Industrial zone for roasting coffee in the Iberian Peninsula, with all the information and interesting features provided in the remarkable Coffee Museum.
Campo Maior is famous for its amazing “Festas do Povo” (People’s Festivities) when all the village is dressed by colourful paper flowers handmade by all the population that artistically ornament the streets, transforming the village in a wonderful handmade garden.
These festivities used to be held every year in September, but nowadays they only take place whenever the “people decides”.

    Castelo de Vide
Castelo de Vide, on another green slope of Serra de São Mamede, is known for its curative waters since roman times and its castle, that gave the town its name and was rebuilt in 1310, was greatly damaged by an explosion in 1705.

Dating from Roman times and sprawling on one of these green slopes, it has preserved within its walls a remarkable patrimony: churches, fountains, mansions, Gothic doorways and the characteristic maze-like Judiaria (Jewish quarter), with its small white houses, cobbled alleys and a synagogue dating from the 13th century. Also worth visiting are the Baroque Church of St. Mary, the 18th-century Town Hall and pillory, the carved stone fountain of "Fonte da Vila" or the 13th-century chapel of São Salvador do Mundo (Saviour of the World). Within the walls of the Castle (now in ruins) which gave the town its name, the small chapel of Nossa Senhora da Alegria (Our Lady of Joy) exhibits splendid polychrome floral tiles from the 17th century.

    Elvas

Recaptured from the Moors in 1230, Elvas grew in importance as a fortress town due to its location only 15km from Badajoz in Spain, just over the Rio Guadiana.
Repeatedly attacked by Spain, the defenders of the town held off periodic attacks, only falling to the Spanish in 1580, when the garrison was betrayed by a bribe allowing King Philip II of Spain to enter and briefly install his court. However, in both 1644 and 1658, the town's defenders withstood attacks by much larger Spanish forces and again in 1801.

The last action in the town was during the Peninsular War (1807-1814), when Wellington made his base here for the successful but bloody attack on the French in Badajoz. A small military garrison is still based here with one of the town's Miltary Museums planned to open on the site of a barracks.
Elvas' star-shaped walls were designed in the 16th century by the Flemish Jesuit engineer Cosmander, along with Correia Lucas and Nicolau de Langres, and the city is still entered through their impressive gates: the Olivença Gate in the south; the Esquina Gate in the west and the São Vincente Gate to the north.
Elvas also has two outlying forts, the Forte de Graça to the north and the superb Forte de Santa Luzia (Tel: 268 628 357) to the south. There are great views from Santa Luzia and admission is free.
Elvas' Castelo has been built on Roman and Moorish remains and for a small entrance fee, visitors can walk the battlements with a view out to Forte de Graça.
The main centre of town is the sleepy Praça da Republica with the tourist office, lazy pavement cafes and the 16th century Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, designed by Francisco de Arruda, the main architect of the Torre de Belem in Lisbon.
Walking up from the church is the former Dominican Convent of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação and the town's ornate pelourinho (pillory) in Largo de Santa Clara, designed in a Manueline style, from where wrong-doers would have been suspended from the four hooks at the top. The plain exterior of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação hides a lavish interior of azulejos and painted columns.
Elvas' other main sights include the Aqueduto da Amoreira - a tiered 7km-long aqueduct which brought fresh water to the town to the marble fountain in Largo da Misericordia and was again partially built to the instructions of architectural genius Francisco de Arruda. The structure was 100 years in the making, is over 30m-tall in parts and was completed in 1622. The English Cemetery down to the left from the castle is a reminder of the horrors of the seige of Badajoz and British soldiers who died during the Peninsular War are buried here.
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas (Tel: 268 367 150) opened in 2007 in an historic building - a former hospital - and houses the collection of modern art of Dr. Antonio Cachola. The Municipal Photography Museum João Carpinteiro.

The city's name is derived from the first roman bridge, which was part of the 3rd military road connecting Lisbon to Merida. An area of upheaval in between borders during the reconquest, Ponte de Sor, which initially belonged to the Templars, was taken back by the Order of St. Benedict. Its first "Foral Charter" was bestowed upon it by the Diocese of Évora in 1161, and later ratified by D. Manuel. Once the roman bridge was gone, King João VI had the bridge that stands today built in 1822.
